Schedule for CAGE 100

Luther College celebrated the 100th birthday of American composer John Cage (b. September 5, 1912) on September 4-5. A complete schedule with videos is below:

"'I have nothing to say and I'm saying it': John Cage and the musical poetics of non-communication"
Presentation by Luther College composer-in-residence Brooke Joyce with performances by Luther faculty and students. First event in the Paideia text and issues series. (CFL Recital Hall, 7 pm)

"Williams Mix"
Electronic sounds (Dahl centennial union, throughout the day)

"Aria with Fontana Mix"
 A work for solo voice and pre-recorded sounds, performed by Rachel Ware (Jenson-Noble Choir room, 9:00 am)



Presentation on Cage and Robert Rauschenberg

Cage collaborated with many artists and musicians, including Rauschenberg. College art curator David Kamm will present a brief lecture/slide show (CFA atrium, 9 am & 1:15 pm)


"
Compositional Experiment: Writing Home about Indeterminacy" An original dance piece by Amanda Hamp, featuring music and words by Cage (CFA atrium, 10:15 am, 12:00 pm, 2:30 pm, 3:45 pm)

"Water Walk"
A humorous piece Cage created for television, performed by Luther Student Jacob DeBacher (10:15 am, Sampson Hoffland atrium)



"Lecture on Nothing"
Cage's seminal spoken word piece, performed by various members of the faculty (lawn in front of Main Hall, or Valders lobby in case of rain, at 12:00, 1:15, 2:30 and 3:45)

"Atlas Eclipticalis"
The day will end with a performance of Cage's "star chart" composition, "Atlas Eclipticalis." All members of the community are invited to participate-- please come to the lawn in front of Preus Library at 7 pm, and bring an instrument to play. Instuctions will be provided, and the performance will end by 7:45. Rain site: CFL main hall.
